How to secure a wireless router?

Hi, I am very bad at computers so I need someone to explain things to me clearly. I recently moved in to my dad's house, and he has an unsecured wireless network. How do I make it secure (change login name and password) so others do not freely use our internet?

Thank you!How to secure a wireless router?
Well first you need to provide more information. What type of router do you have Dlink/Linksis/netgear. They all have different settings. But ether way the easiest way to get into your setting is by going to start -%26gt; run and type in %26quot;cmd%26quot; When your DOS window opens up type in %26quot;ipconfig%26quot; this will give you all the information about your connection. Locate the Default gateway ipaddress generally it would be the last line. Once you locate it open up internet explorer and type in those number into your address link. this will open your setting for your router up. After this you will have to put in a user/password. Generally if your father hasn't done anything to the router the usr/pass is usually admin/admin or usr: admin pass: none.

Once your in the router configuration locate anything which is called wireless encription/password of any kind. Linksis it would be on the top tab where it will say wireless settings. DLink it would be on the left. Once your in all you need to do is find where you can choose from a number of selection such as %26quot;WEP%26quot; %26quot;WPA%26quot; %26quot;WEP Enterprise%26quot; encriptions. When your here you can provide a simple string of password. All routers a different so i would definitely do some research. Hope I helped. Thanks. How to secure a wireless router?

Hi,

What you'll need to do first is call up the Internet provider and find out the router address. This will typically look like (192.168.0.1). This will allow you to enter your router's config page in which you will be able to setup security for your wireless network. i.e. WEP, WPA, etc...

I did this recently for my broadband system and it's pretty straight forward. Hope that helps!
