Can't change my workgroup name.?

hello, i had to reinstall my version of vista, its 64 bit home premium.on a gateway its a clean install. i try to change my workgroup name but i get an error message %26quot;the following error ocurred validating the name *my computer's name*. how do i fix this?

A general network error has occurred.Can%26039;t change my workgroup name.?
This error message can occur if the client is configured with the IP address of a Domain Name System (DNS) server that does not support SRV records, or if the DNS server responds with an unexpected response to the client's query for a SRV record.

To resolve this issue, use the appropriate method:

Temporarily remove the assigned DNS address from the client. After the client has successfully joined the domain, reconfigure the client with a DNS server's IP address.

Use the Netdom tool from the Windows 2000 Support Tools to join the client to the domain. Use the netdom /? command for information about the Netdom command syntax.

Contact the manufacturer of your DNS server to inquire about the availability of an update for the DNS server that supports SRV records.Can%26039;t change my workgroup name.?
Try giving your computer a simple name with no spaces or special characters in it something real simple like %26quot;FRED%26quot;. See if that solves the error.

  • How do I change my SSID?

Hi, I have Cisco Network Magic and my SSID name is Linksys. How do I change it? It probably happened because during setup, when I was about to do the password, it exited out and my user/pass that I set up is deleted I guessed and named into Linksys. No password (I just made one) so I was wondering how do I change my dull name? (Cisco Network Magic)

An I just uninstall it and all the info can be wiped out and then I reinstall it?How do I change my SSID?
just forget about network magic. use you web browser to access your routers web interface. If it is link sys the default is 192.168.1.1

Once you log in you can make changed to many things including the SSID.

I'd go into the router's administration pages and find and change the SSID from there. Linksys routers usually use 192.168.1.1 as the local IP address, so try that first. If it doesn't work, do this to find it:

    1. Click on the Start-%26gt;Run button.

    2. In the text box, type

    cmd

    and press Enter.

    3. A black %26quot;DOS box%26quot; will pop up. In it, enter

    ipconfig /all

A bunch of gibberish will fill the box. Next to %26quot;Default Gateway%26quot; an IP address will appear. This is your router's IP address.

To get to the admin pages, enter the IP address in any browser's Address window. Do this from a computer cabled to the router (in fact, it's a good idea to turn OFF wireless access to the admin pages, for security reasons).

    Hope that helps.

My downstairs tenant is using my wireless connection (he knows my ssid and password), can he hack my network?

My downstairs tenant knows my ssid (wireless network name) and password, is there any way he can somehow get into my network and see what i'm doing? if so, how tecy savvy does one need to be to do this? and how would he go about this? If it's possible, i'm just going to tell him that my internet connection is slow, due to too much bandwith being used and i'll just change my wireless name and password. PLEASE HELP?

unfortunately, my brother gave him my wireless name and password because he needs the internet. Oh and by the way I do have SSID broadcast turned off.

if i change it hes gona be like why did you change it i need it ...besides hes gona say hes paying and blah blahMy downstairs tenant is using my wireless connection (he knows my ssid and password), can he hack my network?
yep if he has the password he can put on a packet sniffer and easily see anything you do over the wireless. that is anything that is not encrypted. like what i'm typing now could be seen by a packet sniffer, also any email. but anything encrypted, like passwords and bank account numbers are usually encrypted, you can tell if you are on an encrypted site by whether or not there's a little lock icon at the bottom of the page or in the address bar. if you have the lock then it is exactly 128x or 256x harder to see.

2nd, if he's a tenant you can say %26quot;you are paying rent, not wifi service, wifi service is an extra $15/mo%26quot; don't let tenants walk all over you because if you decide to download a movie or something he'll be like %26quot;hey my internet's been slow for 4 hours!%26quot; or if you get rid of the internet he''ll say %26quot;hey where's my internet%26quot;. so i'd nip it in the bud and change it and just tell him you upgraded the new security and that you didn't know that he was on it and that your brother wasn't supposed to give you the password.

by the way if he agrees to pay you for the internet, i'd buy another router and plug it into your router and make his own wireless network on a different channel and a different password. since your traffic won't be passed through his router he won't be able to see anything you do unless he's super smart. and if he was that smart he wouldn't be someone's downstairs tenant HAHA. however you could then see his traffic fairly easily if you wanted...My downstairs tenant is using my wireless connection (he knows my ssid and password), can he hack my network?
How many times are you going to ask this question? My downstairs tenant is using my wireless connection (he knows my ssid and password), can he hack my network?
Change the password. No ifs ands or buts.

I'm trying to install a wireless printer (Brother HL-2170W) to my network. Where do I find the following info?

To set up the printer, I have to change my wireless settings. I don't know where to find this option (on windows vista 64-bit). The wizard tells me to change my wireless settings to:

    Communication Mode : Ad-hoc

    Channel : 11 (if applicable)

    Network Name (SSID) : SETUP

    Encryption Mode: None

Any help as to how I can change my settings to this would be much appreciated. Thanks!I%26039;m trying to install a wireless printer (Brother HL-2170W) to my network. Where do I find the following info?

Best of luck.I%26039;m trying to install a wireless printer (Brother HL-2170W) to my network. Where do I find the following info?
That is found in your Rounter.

type 192.168.1.1 in your browser to access it, unless someone changes it to example 192.168.2.1 or so on. you can always use a reset on the back of it to change it back to 192.168.1.1, but change it back later.

--------------------you may not need to change anything on your rounter, try this first------

Look through the menu on your printer screen and find Network printer.

When you select WLAN it should scan your area for wireless networks.

If your wireless is password protected you can type an encryption key using your pad on the printer. I believe it is CASE sensitive.I%26039;m trying to install a wireless printer (Brother HL-2170W) to my network. Where do I find the following info?

you can also create a key which acts as a password to connect to your network .How to set up wireless d-link router?
You need to contact the internet provider and have your new router network protocols set up.

Also, you won't be able to keep a good hacker off your wireless network (particularly in a dorm). Password protect everything!
